EDITOR'S MESSAGE
Particularly this past year or two I see the prying open - be it ever so slight -- of areas that have been closed or out of reach of the society. The retiring officers should be proud of this progress and we all wish to thank each and everyone for their time, leadership and excellent accomplishments this year past. We welcome our new slate of officers and look forward to another great year of genealogy. Names of Monroe Co. town historians appear in this issue and in conjunction it seems appropriate to reinterate some points Kay Thompson made in her excellent presentation last May, relative to those historians. Renumeration is minimal, if at all, and their work is more a labor of love than a job. Most work out of their homes, a few may have the luxury of an office elsewhere for the records. Budgets are very limited. A goodly amount of time is expended by these historians over and beyond their "official" hours. Keeping in mind these points, let the genealogist be courteous and considerate to these dedicated people. Call ahead, at a reasonable hour, for an appointment and then be there on time or call and cancel. Their knowledge can point you in the right direction but don't expect the historian to do the research for you -- that's your task. Remember, not all historians are interested in genealogy. If copies are requested, be prepared to pay for them and postage if necessary. Finally, provide copies of your historical and genealogical information for their files. Who knows, someone else may be looking for the same family as you. |
LOSS
The Rochester Genealogical Society lost a special friend and faithful worker this past June when Arthur Flensted passed away. Our Episcopal Church Records Index and the Flensted File in Local History & Genealogy at Rundel would not have been possible without him. The society has given a copy of the Episcopal Church Records Index to the library in his memory.
FALL PROGRAM
RGS meetings will continue at St. Paul's Episcopal Church (East Avenue at Vick Park B) the third Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. The door opens at 7:00 p.m. and this year mini-workshops will be offered for beginning genealogists at that time. These sessions, conducted by various members of RGS, will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. and finish by 7:30 p.m. in time for our business meeting and regular program. VISITORS ARE MOST WELSOME!
| Thursday Sept. 16 |
Mini-workshop: Charts and Forms.
Program: Our speaker will be Larry Naukam who is a member of our society, a librarian at the Local History and Genealogy Division of the Rochester Rundel Library and a recent traveler to Germany where he spent his vacation visiting family and places. His topic will be Researching At The Library and An Overview of German Genealogical Research. |
| Thursday Oct. 21 |
Mini-workshop: Numbering Systems
Program: Pamela Cook Spanogle, author, lecturer and a member of the Western New York Genealogical Society will talk to us about Researching Collateral Relatives. She will explain the importance of finding all those brothers and sisters of our ancestors. |
| Thursday Nov. 18 |
Mini-workshop: Retrieval
Program: Genealogical Magazines/Periodicals. Learn what is available, what they are good for, subscription information, etc. RGS members please bring in your samples for display. Time allowing, we will also have a panel to assist with your problem ancestors. |
| Thursday Jan. 20 |
Mini-workshop: To be announced. Program: Remember our NEHGS seminar in May when Dr. Bell told us "the time to start writing is NOW!" Well at least two RGS members are doing just that and will share their ideas with us. Virginia Juby and Nancy Nash will talk about Writing a Family History and Genealogy. |
ARE YOU INTERESTED?
Is the Rochester Genealogical Society interested in planning and organizing a Genealogical Tour? One possibility being the National Archives, Library of Congress and the National Society of the DAR, etc.
Any input on this idea will be appreciated. Contact Jean Burr 865-8067.
