EDITOR'S MESSAGE
Congratulations are in order for Evelyn Arthur and Ruth Draxl. These two contributors to the Hear Ye had an article apiece picked up by the Reno County Genealogical Society of Hutchinson, Kansas and published in their newsletter of February, 1984. A complimentary copy was sent to each author - a very nice gesture. It is a good feeling to know someone out there is reading our publication and considers the contents of sufficient interest to pass on to others. Election of officers was held at our May meeting and you will note above several members were reelected to their previous offices and Helen Berkeley was installed as the new President. Helen Rockwell assumes the duties or Membership Chairperson. Retiring President, Peter Bush, has done just a great job these two years past, as has the entire executive committee in guiding and promoting R.G.S. The healthy status of our organization reflects integration of our officers' commitment with the time, effort and cooperation contributed by our members. Three of these contributors, whom are more visible than most deserve our thanks for jobs well done: Barbara Grzymkowski, the "coffee and cookie lady;" Julie Steitz, the gatherer of surrounding societies schedules and events, and Dick Halsey, our book raffle man. Thanks folks for all the help. Would you like to help in some capacity? Any ideas for programs? What can R.G.S. do or change to be more beneficial to its' members~ Direct input relative to these questions or any other items to one of the officers. Looking forward, a first for the Society has come to pass, we now have a financial budget. Our Treasurer, Bob Hesselberth, has fiscally reviewed the past few years, and projected the budgetary needs of the society for the coming year, and as a result, a need for additional revenue to continue the present level of activities was identified. Therefore, an increase in dues - the first in several years - was proposed and passed in order to maintain our progress and is reflected on your membership renewal blank on page 9. Note that the family membership classification has been eliminated. Local members may pick up membership list surname index, etc. at R.G.S. meetings. Please one set only for each member. |
FALL PROGRAM
The theme for the Rochester Genealogical Society's l984-85 Fall Program is "Genealogy Comes Alive," and we hope it does for you with the following programs. The Mini-workshop Series will be repeated for anyone just starting their research (and for others who like to sit thru anything relating to genealogy). The society continues to meet the third Thursday of each month (Dec, July & Aug. excepted) at St.Paul's Episcopal Church, East Ave. and Vick Park B at 7:00 P.M. for the Mini-workshops and 7:30 for the regular meetings. Visitors are welcome.

QUESTIONS?
Beginning in the next issue of the "Hear Ye" we would like to start a Question and Answer column to help you with any problems relating to Rochester, Monroe County and the whole Genesee Valley Region. We do not claim to know all the answers but we will do our best to answer your questions about places in the area, location of vital, church, cemetery, probate, census, land, naturalizations records, or any other item related to this area. (Obviously, our Queries section is still the medium for the questions concerning your ancestors.)
Please keep your questions as specific and as short as possible. Write to Dick Halsey at the Rochester Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 92533, Rochester, N.Y. 14692.
NEW PUBLICATION
The Rochester Genealogical Society is proud to announce the publication of Monroe County, N.Y. Cemetery Record Index by Lawrence Naukam. This book locates all known cemeteries in Monroe County of the past and present and also gives date begun. More importantly for the genealogist, it tells if any records of the cemetery exist and where the records are. The book will be available at meetings for $3.00 or $4.00 by mail from the Society at P.O. Box 92533, Rochester, N.Y. 14692.
PROJECTS
Jean Burr
You are not a true genealogist until you have done something for others or similar words were spoken by Eleanor Myers of CNY at a RGS meeting some years ago.
Is it time for our society to start another special project of indexing or whatever? Independently, or with other groups, some of us have already been doing little and big special projects which need to be surveyed and listed to prevent repetition.
Those members interested in the survey and starting a project, please meet with me for about five minutes during coffee break at the September meeting. If you have questions, please feel free to call me at 865-8067.

A CONNECTING LINK
How often have you searched for a connecting link between two families and never seem to find it. Intuition tells you there is a relationship but concrete evidence is lacking. Here is one instance articles from two different publications tie together to give that elusive link.
Our Fall 1981 issue of the Hear Ye on page 6 printed an abstract, Memoirs of Joannah Adams Frank. The author had a brother, Aaron Adams and a sister, Laura Ann. Laura (b 1802) married one Gaylord Willsey. Contained in Tree Talks, March 1984 (publication of Central New York Genealogical Society) are excerpts from tbe diary of the Honorable Jacob Willsey (contributed by Carol Willsey Bell of Youngstown, Ohio). On page 62, of Tree Talks, for 4 March 1833 Jacob recorded, "Aaron Adams came out from Mount Morris" (N.Y.). As you prooably have surmised, Mount Morris was the home of Joannah, Aaron and Laura Ann Adams, and thus that elusive link has been established.

EARTHQUAKE
On April 18, 1906, an earthquake measuring 8.25 on the Richter Scale rocked San Francisco. The quake, lasting 48 seconds, and the subsequent fire, lasting three days and nights, caused tremendous property damage. The number of casualties, never completely tabulated, was in the hundreds.
To arrive at an accurate total for the number of dead, Mrs. Gladys Hansen, San Francisco City Archivist, has made a thorough search of all available records. Her total of 826 known dead far exceeds the official figure of 475 given by the 1907 Board of Supervisors. Yet even with her careful calculations, Mrs. Hansen believes the revised figure too low. She appeals to anyone having knowledge of any person killed in the 1906 disaster to write to her with whatever information they have. The names of the dead will be entered in the official roster in the Public Library, available to researchers of history and genealogy.
We encourage anyone seeking information on people killed in the 1906 Earthquake and Fire to write to: Mrs. Gladys Hansen, San Francisco Archives, Public Library, Civic Center, San Francisco, CA 94102. Please enclose a stamped, self addressed envelope.
