PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: "1910 & 1920 CENSUS"
Ruth Metzler

January brings an annual opportunity to look back and to look ahead. What have we accomplished as a society; what do we plan to do next?

It is a time for us to look back -- to 1910 -- and to look ahead -- to 1920; that is to the release of the 1920 census microfilm. Any reflection on the 1910 census, its genealogical value and availability in our own community, has to start with a conversation with Member 335, Jim Roome. That is precisely what your president did.

As a steady user of the census collections, Jim recognized their value, the limited budget of the Library, and the increasing interest and resources of our Society. At the RGS Executive meeting on 18 Nov. 1986 at the home of then President Helen Berkeley, it was suggested that R GS donate the remainder of the census films to complete the 1910 collection at the Rochester Public Library. The group approved an expenditure not to exceed $100 for the 1987 donation. This would furnish five rolls and Jim volunteered to coordinate the purchase.

Wayne Arnoid of the Local History Division supported the effort and asked Jim to inventory their present holdings, determine future purchases and write and send orders to the National Archives. The exception was that the New York City area not be included in the purchase. Over the years the RGS Executive committee approved annual purchases of more 1910 census films.

On 28 Nov. 1990, the RGS Executive Committee met again. With Jim's input, we looked back -- 22 films have been purchased to date; we looked ahead -- 19 films are yet to be purchased not counting the New York City area films. With unanimous agreement, it was decided that RGS would complete the acquisition of all 19 films within the year 1991. We'll be reporting to you on the progress of this project!

The entire 1910 census microfilm for Upstate New York will soon be available at the Rochester Public Library, due in large part to the generous far-sightedness of one man who led the way, and the entire RGS membership who supported and contributed to the plan. After that, we can all start looking ahead -- to 1920! For on Monday 2 Mar. 1992, the directors of the National Archives eleven regional archives from coast to coast and Don W. Wilson, Archivist of the United States in Washington, DC will unlock the microfilm cabinets housing the 1920 census microfilm!

In addition the Society has recently purchased the 1860 Census Index for the States of Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

ROCHESTER GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY NEWS NOTES:
Robert Heselberth

COMPUTER INTEREST GROUP

If you are interested in computer genealogy, please contact Jim Hall (#381). RGS is considering staring a computer special interest group. Meetings and programs are still to be determined. The objective of the group will be to share ideas, information, and techniques for using computers for genealogical record keeping and research. If you have not filled in a computer survey questionnaire, send a SASE to Jim and he will forward you one.

EDITOR & PUBLISHER NEEDED FOR HEAR YE

If you have a computer and would like to use it for some desktop publishing, the RGS needs you! The current Hear-Ye co-editors will have been at it for five years this coming June, and would like to step aside. The job has been broken down into small assignments for a variety of people who contribute. This has minimized the work that the editors must do to produce three issues per year.

The transition to new editors shouldn't be difficult. Bob Hesselberth has offered to continue to help with the next few issues. Volunteers for the job are asked to phone either Bob Heselberth or Jim Roome to discuss the matter.

NEW FISCAL YEAR

At the September 1990 meeting a vote was taken to approve changing our fiscal year end to June 30th. This will make our fiscal year coincide with our membership year, and eliminate confusion about the period that our annual dues cover.

TAPE LENDING LIBRARY
Ruth H. Metzler

In our September meeting, a new service was made available to R.G.S. members; the provision of genealogical lectures recorded on tape cassettes, These may be borrowed by members for a loan period of one month, free of charge. It is now possible for our members to listen to a lecture of their choice, in their home, at their convenience.

We have introduced this service with a selection of lectures which were presented at the July 1990 GCNY. The speaker, who have given us their fun support and approval for this project, together with their topics are:

#4 Dr. Stanley R. Ames "Introduction to Genealogical Computing"
#5 Florence Christoph "Migration Within New York"

Carter Livermore, as manager of this tape lending library, has been responsible for the technical details involved in preparation and circulation of the collection. Members who cannot attend meetings may borrow tapes by mail. Requests should be addressed to him, at the R.G.S. address, stating the tape number, speaker and topic desired. The Executive Board has set a $2.00 postage and handling fee for requests by mail. While the service is not-for-profit, it is expected to cover its own costs. Members who borrow tapes at meeting deposit $1.00 per tape, which is returned when the tape is returned.

Members response to this service will have a direct effect on future action. At its' November planning meeting, the board empowered Carter to acquire more titles from Triad, a professional genealogical recording company, if he feels that there is sufficient interest or demand. The Board also discussed expansion of the range of topics, in other directions, in order that genealogically-related information be made available to our membership in their home.

GENEALOGICAL CONFERENCE IN ROCHESTER
Jim Ault

July 5th, 6th and 7th (1990) offered an unique opportunity for local genealogists to attend a conference at Rochester's Riverside Convention Center. Some fifty plus meetings were scheduled over the three-day period and the total attendance was between 400 and 500 people. A number of RGS members took part as speakers, volunteers and participants. The conference was organized by Genealogical Conference of New York, Inc.

The RGS booth in the exhibit area generated considerable interest, we acquired seven new members, as well as selling a number of our publications and canvas tote bags. Dick Halsey demonstrated the computer index of Genesee Country Family File and did searches of the index for a number of interested people.

The theme of the conference, "Crossing the Border," was developed by presentations dealing with the movement of our ancestors through the history of our nation. Talks were offered on topics such as Migration--England to New England, New England to New York, Connecticut to the Western Reserve (Ohio), and tracing the Origins of the Palatines of New York.

Speakers included nationally known genealogists such as Hank Jones Jr. of California, Gary Boyd Roberts and William Schoeffler of the New England Historical and Genealogical Society, Kip Sperry and Jayare Roberts of the Family History Library of Salt Lake City, Gordon Remington of Salt Lake City, Maralyn Wellauer of Milwaukee, John Haisey of York, Pennsylvania, David Paul Davenport of Marietta, Georgia, and Leland Meitzler of Orting, Washington.

Speakers from the Rochester area, many of whom are RGS members included: Dr. Stanley Ames, Wayne Arnold, Craig Braack, Scott B. Chase, Susan Conklin, Phyllis Hackelman, John Larish, Ruth Metzler, Ruth Naparstick, Lawrence Naukam, Ronald Nichols, Robert Rowe, and Walter Steesy, conference chairman, Speakers were also present representing the New York State Archives, New Brunswick Archives, Ontario Archives, Quebec Archives, Canadian National Archives, and The United Empire Loyalists Association.

Attendees went home with a renewed appreciation of the continual migrations that our ancestor's experienced in their quest for a better life for themselves and their families. The personal sacrifices of leaving homes in Europe to emigrate to a new land with almost no hope of ever returning, even for a brief visit, is more than most people today would even consider. Many families had similar experiences as they moved West over the couple of hundred years our country was being settled. The desire for seeking "A Better Life" had to be very strong as well as a firm faith in the belief that it would be found somewhere.

Some twenty-five publishers, information suppliers, etc. had booths offering genealogical materials and data. Computer training classes were offered for record keeping, writing, and publishing. As stated elsewhere TRIAD tapes of the lectures are available for loan through our Society.
